POKOTABI / UDON Arashiyama-tei
自家製麺 うどん 嵐山亭
Located on Saga Nakanoshima, UDON Arashiyama-tei pairs a clear broth brewed from Rishiri kelp and shaved fish flakes with chewy, slender house-made noodles, served alongside yuba, beef tendon, Kyoto duck, and more.
01 / ABOUT THE PLACE
The rising aroma of dashi when the bowl arrives captures the understated pleasure of noodles in Kyoto. At UDON Arashiyama-tei, the broth is brewed by slowly extracting umami from Hokkaido Rishiri kelp combined with shaved fish flakes, creating a gentle yet deeply structured stock. The slender house-made noodles, kneaded from an original blend of 2 varieties of flour, offer a smooth, fluid slurp with a satisfying chew, carrying the savory broth cleanly with every mouthful. For a clear showcase of the broth's balance, the signature Yuba Udon is an ideal introduction. Delicate sheets of Kyoto yuba (tofu skin) and fresh mizuna float over the surface, accompanied by a touch of wasabi that can be melted into the soup to sharpen its natural sweetness right down to the final drop.
Those looking for richer fare can turn to the curry udon topped with tender stewed domestic beef tendon and a soft-boiled onsen egg. The dashi-infused curry sauce melds with the savory stewed beef, punctuated by aromatic Kujo scallions and runny egg yolk; an order of rice can be added once the noodles are finished to savor every drop of the curry sauce. Another robust option is the nabeyaki udon, served bubbling in a pot with prawn tempura, nama-fu (wheat gluten), chicken, yuba, and egg, all soaking up the hot broth while the noodles retain their resilient spring.
On warmer days or whenever a firmer bite is preferred, cold noodle options shine. The hamo ten zaru udon features chilled noodles accompanied by crisp tempura of daggertooth pike conger sourced directly from Nishiki Market, pumpkin, and green chili pepper. The domestic beef tendon and onsen egg bukkake can be ordered with either hot or cold broth poured over the noodles. There are also dipping-style tsukemen options, such as the Kyoto duck and Kujo scallion tsukemen, pairing tender local duck with generous helpings of scallions in a concentrated dipping broth.
Set along Saga Nakanoshima, the dining room offers window seats where guests can watch the river during an unhurried midday meal. Operating for lunch from 11:00 to 15:30, the shop provides an easy, comfortable stop whether walking the area solo or sharing a table with family.
